Infant Daycare Safety Checklist

Use this checklist to ask specific questions about the everyday systems that protect babies in childcare.

Safe sleep

I saw the sleep area where my baby will rest. Staff explained how babies are positioned and how the sleep space is kept clear. Staff explained how sleep checks are completed and recorded. I discussed any comfort item, swaddle, monitor, or specialist equipment before enrolment. I understand how the provider handles a baby who will not settle or has a different sleep pattern.

Feeding and allergies

Bottles, expressed milk, and formula are labelled, stored, prepared, and warmed safely. Staff record feeds and communicate if my baby takes less than usual. The provider explained how solid foods are introduced and how reactions are recorded. A written allergy or individual feeding plan can be shared with all relevant staff. Staff explained who can respond to an allergic reaction and how emergency treatment is handled.

Supervision and daily care

Babies are supervised by sight and sound during play, feeding, transitions, outdoor time, and sleep. Staff explained how feeds, nappies, naps, and concerns are documented. The provider has a plan when the usual caregiver is absent. I observed calm, attentive handling and age-appropriate interaction. I know how staff respond when a baby is unusually unsettled, sleepy, or difficult to feed.

Hygiene and infection prevention

Staff explained hand hygiene for adults and children. Changing surfaces are cleaned between uses and clean items are kept separate from dirty items. Toys and objects mouthed by babies are cleaned according to policy. I received the written illness and return-to-care policy. I know how families are notified about relevant exposures or outbreaks.

Emergency readiness

Relevant staff hold current pediatric first-aid and CPR training. Staff can describe their response to choking, breathing difficulty, and serious injury. Emergency contacts and authorised pickup contacts are current. The provider has a plan for fire, severe weather, evacuation, and urgent medical transport. I know how to share my baby’s individual health plan with the care team.
